MSDS: A Tool for Identifying Hazards

You can identify the risks associated with one or more of the procedures, equipment, and materials involved in an experiment by:
Reviewing the experiment with an experienced peer, a recognized expert on the issue, or your supervisor or Principal Investigator
Reviewing literature for articles describing similar work
Reviewing the safety literature, exposure guidelines, and hazardous chemical lists for information on hazardous substances or procedures
involved.
Contacting the Office of Environmental Health and Safety
Research often involves working with materials and carrying out procedures for which the hazards are not completely known. In these cases, be conservative and assume a higher level of risk.
Whenever possible, replace a hazardous material with another material that is less hazardous. Use the smallest amount of hazardous material possible when substitution is not an option.
