Minimizing Contact with Chemicals

Risk of exposure to toxic chemicals can be reduced by:
substituting with less hazardous or toxic materials
reducing volumes
ventilating by using a chemical fume hood
minimizing contact by using appropriate PPE
Avoid direct contact with any chemical, keeping it off hands, face, clothing, and shoes. Never intentionally smell, inhale, or taste a chemical. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water after handling any chemical and removing your PPE.

Always substitute highly toxic materials with less toxic materials whenever possible and use as little material as possible in your experiment. Handle volatile chemicals in a chemical fume hood, particularly if they have an occupational exposure standard below 50 ppm. Wear the personal protective equipment while maintaining engineering controls (chemical fume hoods, splashguards, etc.) to eliminate skin, eye, and respiratory tract contact.
