  Eye protection

Eye protection (as well as most other PPE) must be selected based on the tasks to be performed and the materials to be used. Safety glasses are the minimum eye protection that should be worn when in the laboratory; they are reasonably protective against flying objects and minor splash hazards associated with small quantities of chemicals. Goggles offer the eyes splash protection and should be used when handling a corrosive liquid or a large volume of chemical (greater than one liter). A face shield should be worn when it is important to protect the face and neck in addition to the eyes. Often face shields are worn with goggles.

OSHA requires that all eye protection used in the work place meet the requirements of ANSI Z87.1 and bear their mark. Normal prescription eye glasses do not provide the level of protection required.
