Personal Protective Equipment - Respiratory Protection

Always attempt to control your exposure to toxic chemicals by using a chemical fume hood, additional ventilation, or some other engineering control. Only when this is not feasible should you consider wearing a respirator. Respirators are designed to protect against specific types of substances in specific physical form (e.g. particulates or gases), and in limited concentration ranges. These and other factors related to the task and the environment in which it will be used are considered in making a respirator selection decision. The OEHS is responsible for respirator selection procedures throughout the University.

Types of respiratory protective equipment occasionally worn in laboratories include:
Air purifying respirators that remove particulates
Air purifying respirators that remove gases and vapors
Atmosphere supplying respirators

Prior to wearing a respirator you must meet all elements of the University's written respiratory protection plan. Users of respirators must be thoroughly trained in proper use, maintenance, storage, and limitations of this equipment; the nature of the respiratory hazard; and the signs of respirator failure. If your work requires the use of a respirator, contact your supervisor or the OEHS.
