Use the hood sash as barrier protection and work at least six inches in the hood.
Safe Operation of Chemical Fume Hoods (cont.)

When using a chemical fume hood keep the following principles of safe operation in mind:

Keep all chemicals and apparatus at least six inches inside the hood (behind sash).
If possible, work with the sash between your face and your materials.
Avoid making swift arm or body movements in front of or inside the hood.
Open and close the sash slowly.
Hoods are not intended for storage of chemicals. Materials that must be stored in them should be kept to a minimum. Objects in the hood must not block the slots in the baffle. If necessary, elevate instruments or apparatus by using blocks or racks.
