  Exposure Concerns

While working in a laboratory, you or one of your colleagues may become concerned about chemical exposure. This may be because of the type or quantity of material you are handling, or perhaps because you are particularly sensitive to a certain chemical. One may be particularly sensitive to a chemical due to an underlying health condition (asthma, allergies), or because there has been a change in health status (anemia, new medication). Employees planning to conceive a child or who are pregnant are frequently concerned about how their exposures will affect the developing fetus. The Office of Environmental Health and Safety and the Employee Health Department are prepared to address your concerns and work with you and your supervisor as necessary to ensure a healthy and safe work place for all employees.

To know when and how to seek assistance, each laboratory worker must be able to:
Recognize the symptoms of overexposure
Understand the warning properties of the chemicals they use
Know how to obtain exposure assessment assistance and medical consultative services
