Assemble and Store Materials Receiving and Transporting Chemicals When transporting chemicals through public spaces such as hallways, use secondary containers such as boxes or rubber / plastic "bump" buckets. If more than one package must be transported, use a sturdy cart with a lip or sides to prevent containers from falling off if jarred when passing over uneven surfaces. When walking through the hall watch out for obstacles, such as the sudden opening of doors, and if there is an elevator designated for transport of chemical materials, use it. About 25% of our chemical spills occur during transport. If you are transporting a compressed gas cylinder, make sure it is strapped to the dolly and a cap is protecting the valve. |
