The visiting researcher whom you have been expecting knocks on your laboratory door.

What are your responsibilities to ensure the safety of a visiting researcher?

Allow them to enter. They are familiar with laboratories and should know the procedure.

Make them feel comfortable and welcome. Ask them if they'd like to join you in your days work.

Have the researcher wait outside until you have stabilized your experiment. After doing so, offer to take them to lunch and review laboratory and safety procedures.

Assign one employee familiar with the laboratory's procedures and safety programs to orient the visitor with these procedures, review special laboratory hazards and oversee their activities while in the laboratory.

Before allowing the researcher to enter your lab, ask them if they are familiar with the type of experiment you are presently conducting. If so; allow them in. If not, explain briefly and then allow them to join you.
