Training for Recognition & Prevention of Sexual Harassment

Frequently Asked Questions about the Requirement for
Training for Recognition and Prevention of Sexual Harassment
  1. Why am I getting e-mails saying I need to take Training for Recognition & Prevention of Sexual Harassment?

You should receive this e-mail notice if you supervise any University employees. You completed a Training Requirements Assessment on-line at http://www.yale.edu/training to identify what training would be necessary for your particular position. One of the questions on the assessment asks if you supervise any University employees. If you answered "Yes", that automatically placed you on the list for e-mails reminding you to complete the requirement.

  2. Why does Yale require this training?

The State of Connecticut requires employers to provide information sessions on sexual harassment issues for supervisory employees. All members of Yale's faculty and staff who have the authority to hire, discharge, assign or direct one or more individuals are covered by the law and are expected to attend a session or take the on-line course, available after November 15th, 2005, within the first six months of employment.

  3. Is attending the class the only way to meet the requirement?

No. The University has developed an on-line training program expected to be available in October 2006. When the class schedule does not work well with your schedule, the on-line version will permit you to complete the course at a more convenient time. Once the on-line version is available, if this requirement is in your record as not satisfied, you will receive an e-mail notifying you of the on-line option, with a link to the course site.

  4. I don't have access to a computer. Will there still be classes scheduled?

Yes, we will continue to schedule classes periodically. Call the Learning Center at 432-5660 to enroll, or e-mail learning@yale.edu. You can also enroll directly through our web site at www.yale.edu/learningcenter, under the category Employee Specific.

  5. I'm a faculty member and I do not currently supervise employees. Should I take the training?

While the training is not required for faculty and staff who do not supervise employees, faculty may find themselves in the future supervising University employees including, for example, clerical and technical staff, post doctoral associates or casuals. For this reason, we encourage all faculty to complete the training.

  6. How often do I have to take this training?

Once you complete the training you do not need to take it again while you are employed by Yale University.

  7. I took this course several years ago at Yale. Do I have to do it again?

We are aware that some records of previous course attendance were not forwarded correctly to the Training Management System. Please e-mail us at learning@yale.edu with the information you can recall: the year, the instructor's name, or the location. We will work with you to update your record. Please check to see if you may have a copy of a certificate you received at the time.

  8. I am in a new job and don't supervise anyone now. How can I change my answer?

You can email the Learning Center at learning@yale.edu and we will update your training assessment.

  9. I am a Dean /Department Chair and would like to know who in my department needs to take the training, and who has completed it. How can I get this information?

Your business manager has access to this information in the Training Management System. If your business manager needs training on how to access this information please contact Jessica Hammatt (jessica.hammatt@yale.edu, 432-1552).You may also email learning@yale.edu. We will need your department code (ex: FASECO for the Economics department). 10. I am a physician at Bridgeport Hospital, as well as Yale, and took the Recognition and Prevention of Sexual Harassment at Bridgeport. Do I have to take it again?

Therefore, it is necessary for you to complete our training. You will be able to do that on-line at your convenience with our on-line training.

  11. If I leave Yale, does that mean I have to take this training again at my new job?

You will need to check with your new employer.
